The Training Committee has a responsibility of scheduling, promoting and conducting Scouter Development Training, a spiritual seminar for adult leaders of the Catholic faith. A second responsibility is to schedule, promote and conduct Chaplain Aide Training for Scouts. Finally, the Training Committee assists those Scouters interested in attending a one week course Scouting in the Catholic Church conducted each summer at Philmont Training Center.

Scouter Development
The Scouter Development: Lay Apostolate Formation for Scouting program is designed to help Scouters to a better understanding of the role of religious faith in their lives. The work done in Scouting is a true ministry. As adults we are witnessing not only to our own faith commitment, but we are also trying to help Scouts make a personal faith commitment. The course is offered twice a year and lasts about 5 hours. See the calendar for dates and location.
Chaplain Aide Training
Chaplain Aide Training is designed to provide Scouts with the basic tools necessary to help their fellow Scouts as they grow, both physically and spiritually.
The purpose of this program is to:

  • Make the 12th point of the Scout Law more meaningful in life.
  • Promote a greater understanding of and appreciation of all religions.
  • Encourage Scouts to earn their appropriate religious emblems, providing Scouts with the opportunity to work with an ordained minister of the clergy, thereby gaining insight into the religious professional life.
The course is offered in the spring and lasts about 2 hours.

Scouting in the Catholic Church

Each summer the National Catholic Committee on Scouting conducts a one-week training course, Scouting in the Catholic Church, at the Philmont Training Center. The Training Committee can assist interested Scouters in applying for this great experience. Partial scholarships are sometimes available for active members of the FWDCCS.

Scout Leader Catechist Training
Scout Leaders, in a special way, can be instrumental in sharing the Catholic faith through the scouting environment by encouraging the faith walk of youth and by their witness to the love of God. For this reason, the St. Junipero Serra Institute is offering a certification to assist scout leaders in sharing the Gospel. The training will be focused on evangelization and Catechesis and topics will include Sacred Scripture, liturgy, sacraments, and moral life among others. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition, as well as the Catholic Bible RSV are the basic texts for the training.
