NINE NCCS Scholarships Totaling $25,000 Will Be Awarded in 2022

We are excited to share with you our first NCCS Scholarship Newsletter and to announce some exciting changes for 2022! In 2022, the National Catholic Committee on Scouting (NCCS) will award 20% more scholarship money totaling $25,000 as the NCCS Scholarship Program. We are happy to announce 2 NEW named scholarships (see details below) in addition to the 7 existing Emmett J Doerr Memorial Scout Scholarships. Here is what the NCCS is awarding in 2022… NCCS Scholarships for 2022: Seven Emmett J Doerr Memorial Scout Scholarships Totaling $20,000 NEW $2,000 Bill and Kay Davies Scholarship NEW $3,000 NCCS Francis Parater Scholarship NINE NCCS Scholarships Totaling $25,000 Will Be Awarded in 2022 We need your help to inform qualified applicants about the scholarships and encourage them to apply. Connect to the NCCS website to find a list of eligibility requirements and the 2022 application needed to apply for the scholarships. Scholarship applicants only need to fill out one application to apply for all the NCCS Scholarships. Applicants will automatically be considered for all scholarship awards. Visit our Scholarship website   Introducing the Bill and Kay Davies Scholarship Scouting has been a part of the Davies’ family for many years. Kay’s father is an Eagle Scout and served as Council President of the Potawatomi Council in Wisconsin. Four of her five brothers and seven nephews are Eagle Scouts. With that dedication to Scouting, it is not a surprise their two sons and grandson are also Eagle Scouts. The Davies’ have been members of NCCS since the early 1990’s. Kay has served many years as the Advisor of the Conference Committee and is a recipient of the Silver St. George Award. Bill served as the NCCS National Chair for three years, Finance vice-chair for six years, and is currently an Executive Board member. In addition to activity with the NCCS, Bill chaired the Archdiocese of St. Paul and the Minneapolis Catholic Committee. He is a recipient of the Brother Barnabus Founders Award, Silver St. George Award and recently received the BSA National Duty to God Award. When asked about their recent contribution over and beyond their normal annual gift needed by the Committee to operate, Bill acknowledged “The past year has been a challenge to youth in Scouting.” He further explained “to help these youth, Kay and I discussed how to help Scouts as they complete high school. We decided to make a contribution to start a new fund to help support a scholarship for Catholic Scouts.”    This new $2,000 scholarship will enable Catholic Scouts to pursue further education beyond High School. Kay and Bill added, “we hope our generosity is just the start” as they invite more donors to make an impact with them, “Please join us to provide opportunities for future generations and consider making an additional contribution to the NCCS for scholarships”. Scholarship applicants will use the same form to apply for all NCCS Scholarships and will automatically be considered for all awards.   Learn About the New NCCS $3,000 Frank Parater Scholarship This new scholarship is funded through the NCCS Scholarship Endowment and is named for Francis “Frank” Parater, Servant of God and Eagle Scout. (1897-1920) Francis “Frank” Parater was born October 10, 1897, in Richmond, Va. As a youth, Parater was an altar server. In his late teens, he became active in Troop 40, part of what was then the Richmond Council and is now the Heart of Virginia Council. He took on multiple leadership roles with the troop and built a reputation as a Scout with strong ideals and sound judgment. He became an Eagle Scout in 1915. In 1917, Parater graduated as valedictorian from Benedictine High School (now Benedictine College Preparatory) in Richmond. Discerning a call to the priesthood, he entered the seminary in 1917. There, he was noted for his dedication to prayer and his intellectual and physical abilities. During studies in Rome, he died of rheumatic fever in 1920 at the age of 22. Because of his exceptional life of virtue, a cause for his canonization was opened in 2001. A new $3,000 NCCS Scholarship will be offered in 2022 in his honor. Scholarship applicants will use the same form to apply for all NCCS Scholarships and will automatically be considered for all awards.   Meet the 2021 Emmett J Doerr Memorial Scout Scholarship Recipients “Volunteering is part of my commitment to living out my faith and my oath as a Scout. I am committed to continuing my life of service to causes large and small, following God’s commandment to “love one another” and the Scout oath to “help other people at all times.” Fox Melo FOX MELO – $5,000 Recipient Fox Melo, of Burbank, CA has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship through the Emmett J. Doerr Memorial Scout Scholarship. He is a member of St. Finbar Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Fox has earned all four religious emblems offered by NCCS and is active in his church including being an altar server and Youth Group member. In his community, Fox’s love for the ocean has inspired him to provide over five-hundred volunteer hours at the Aquarium of the Pacific and to organize beach and park clean-ups. He also volunteered at 5K’s to raise money for cancer charities and supported the YMCA, the Burbank Tournament of Roses, Kiwanis, the Elks, and St. Vincent DePaul Society. At John Burroughs High School, Fox is a member of the National Honor Society and a Life Member of the California Scholarship Federation. A team player, Fox was a participant on the Junior Varsity and Varsity John Burroughs Boys Swim Teams and Water Polo Teams, where he received the Spirit Award. He is a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Ambassador, HOBY Academic All-Star and an AP Scholar Award winner. One thing that I keep in mind is that I do not know what others are going through and even if I help in a small way it could have a huge positive impact in their lives.” Joshua Royal JOSHUA ROYAL – $4,000 Recipient Joshua Royal, of Omaha, NE, has been awarded a $4,000 scholarship through the Emmett J. Doerr Memorial Scout Scholarship. He is a member of St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Omaha. Joshua has earned three of the religious emblems offered by the NCCS, Light of Christ, Parvuli Dei and Ad Altare Dei. He has also been involved in his parish as an altar server, lector, choir participant and with the Food Pantry Ministry Team. Community service is where Joshua really makes a difference in the lives of others. He has provided over 1200 hours of volunteer service and has assisted those in need through the Heart Ministry Center, Lolo’s Angels which serves families affected by pediatric cancer, the VA Hospital, Omaha Food Bank, Emergency Pregnancy Services and Siena Francis House for the homeless. Through his high school, Creighton Prep, he supported drug-free programs, volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and helped with Hurricane Harvey disaster relief. He has also worked with Offutt Air Force Base and the American Red Cross. Read more… “Volunteering is just a way of life for my family and me. It is what everyone should do! …Through acts of service, individuals can grow into leaders who will one day change the lives of others.” Elaine Smith ELAINE SMITH – $3,000 Recipient Elaine Smith, of Columbus, OH, has been awarded a $3,000 Scholarship by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting® (NCCS) through the Emmett J. Doerr Memorial Scout Scholarship Fund. She is a member of St. Margaret’s of Cortona Catholic Church in the Diocese of Columbus and is the first female Eagle Scout to receive the Doerr Scholarship. Elaine has earned both the Ad Altare Dei and the Pope Pius XII Religious Emblems offered by the NCCS and is a recipient of the Bishop’s Youth Award. She has been an altar server since third grade, a recipient of the Serra Club Altar Server Award and a Eucharistic Minister for four years. Elaine also volunteered at Vacation Bible School, served at church events and on the Catholic Camporee Staff. Through community service, Elaine discovered that she loves working with children, especially Special Olympics participants. She also enjoys baking for others, particularly at the Ronald McDonald House. Elaine volunteers at Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber retirement center, Heart to Heart Food Pantry, Holy Family Soup Kitchen, 4-H Walk and Serve and Hilltop YMCA. At Bishop Ready High School, Elaine has been a member of Student Council and National Honor Society. Read more… “I have been blessed in my life with many things, and I realize that I can express gratitude for those blessings by serving others…I can inspire other people to also give back to their communities.” Logan Goodbred LOGAN GOODBRED – $2,000 Recipient Logan Goodbred of Oswego, IL, has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting® (NCCS) through the Emmett J. Doerr Memorial Scout Scholarship Fund. He is a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in the Diocese of Joliet. At his church, Logan serves as lead altar server and is a member of the Youth Group. He has been a Vacation Bible school teacher and is a recipient of the NCCS Ad Altare Dei Award. In his community, Logan helps at the local American Legion and VFW post. He also volunteers weekly at the Oswego Fire Department. For the Versiti Blood Center, Logan both donates regularly and helps run blood drives. He is involved with several non-profit organizations, including Bickford Senior Living Center, Kendall County Food program, Feed My Starving Children and Hessel House serving the homeless. Recognizing the Scout Motto to “Be Prepared”, he holds CPR certification through the American Heart Association. Throughout his high school years, Logan was a member of National Honor Society and Key Club and volunteered as a tutor in the school’s peer tutoring program.  Read more… “Ever since starting scouts and practicing my faith, volunteering has been at the forefront of everything I do…Volunteering is about helping others and passing it on…I am always glad to volunteer because I love to see someone with a smile on their face and it puts purpose in my soul.” David Hoyt DAVID HOYT – $2,000 Recipient David Hoyt, of Jacksonville, FL, has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting® (NCCS) through the Emmett J. Doerr Memorial Scout Scholarship Fund. He is a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in the Diocese of St. Augustine. David faced a challenge early in life when his mom passed away days before his first birthday. His grandparents adopted him and became Mom and Dad. When he was 5 years old, they took him to an Eagle Court of Honor and afterwards he told them “I want to do that” and he became a Scout. At his church, David is an altar server, a member of the Youth Group, a Vacation Bible School teacher and helps with fish fry fundraisers. He has earned three of the Religious Emblems offered by NCCS including Light of Christ, Ad Altare Dei and Pope Pius XII. In addition to his own church, David volunteers at his parent’s church assisting with the Live Nativity, Vacation Bible School and for the past six years the Pumpkin Patch. In his community, David has volunteered at the local food bank and Clare White Mission, which helps homeless veterans and low-income clients. He has also worked with the Jacksonville animal shelter, Fallen Officers Memorial and participated in community cleanups. He was the top volunteer for the Exchange Club of Jacksonville’s fundraiser for the prevention of child abuse, placing American flags throughout the community during major holidays. I have always greatly enjoyed the opportunities I have had to serve others, and I seek out ways to assist the community as often as possible.” Joseph Bowers JOSEPH BOWERS – $2,000 Recipient Joseph Bowers of Silver Creek, NY, has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting® (NCCS) through the Emmett J. Doerr Memorial Scout Scholarship Fund. He is a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in the Diocese of Buffalo. At his church, Joseph has been active as an altar server, usher, lector, a Youth Group leader and Vacation Bible School teacher. He served as Master of Ceremonies for the Diocese of Buffalo’s Catholic Youth Convention and was a Youth Ambassador for the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis. Joseph has received the NCCS Ad Altare Dei Award. In his community, Joseph volunteered with several service organizations including Key Club and the Knights Against Cancer. He assisted with Veterans and Memorial Day ceremonies and local environmental cleanup projects. One of his favorite places to help has been the Silver Creek Food Pantry, especially at Christmas time preparing and distributing food baskets. This has become a tradition for Joseph and his family. Joseph earned American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR and First Aid Certification and used these skills to work for the Silver Creek Schools.
